Double Yellow Blind Corner

One day I am going to have a front row seat or worse yet be involved in a double yellow blind corner. I see this EVERY time that I ride. What is it you ask? Just what it sounds like, a car that decides to pass a cyclist by crossing a double yellow line while going around a corner they can’t see around. I’ve seen some pretty close call during my years of riding. I’ve had a front row seat to see oncoming cars swerving off the road to miss the idiot that is passing us, cars slamming on the brakes because they realize that they aren’t going to make it. My biggest fear is that I might have more then just a front row seat for a collision. If it went really wrong for me I could end up involved in the event from a car swerving out of the way to miss the oncoming car and into me, or be hit as the cars bounce off each other and back into me.

It ceases to amaze me why people can’t be more patient and wait for a safe place to pass. Myself and riding friends are often pedaling along at 20-23 mph in a 25 mph zone and get passed. If we were in our cars instead of some bicycles on the road would we have been passed on a double yellow? I doubt it.  Drivers need to stop and remember that in the State of Maryland a bicycle is considered a motor vehicles and has the same rights as a car and needs to obey the same rules of the road as motor vehicle. What the drivers really need to remember that on the bike is someone’s loved one; a husband or wife, brother or sister, son or daughter. One day it could be that drivers loved one on a bike that gets hurt.

Drivers of all types and ages have passed me in the double yellow blind corner scenario. There seems to be no one group that offends more then another. Heck, both county and state police cars in this situation have even passed me!

Patience seems to be lost these days. People are willing to risk their lives to get ahead a second or two. Is it worth it? I don’t think so! It always brings a smile to my face when I roll up to one of these idiots that has passed us at the next red light.

About Ernest

Ernest is the owner of the Crofton Bike Doctor located in the Village of Waugh Chapel Shopping Center. Ernest has been in the industry since 1989 when he first started to work at the Bike Doctor of Arnold. During that time I developed a love for cycling and retail. I graduated from the University of Maryland and live and ride locally. I enjoy riding off road and on the road as well as doing a little bike touring. As a teenager I did a trip in Maine and then over to Novia Scotia which helped cement my love for riding. Since then I have done tours in the Canyons of Utah as well as several trips along the C&O Canal. Today I have both mountain bikes and road bikes that I enjoy riding. One of the most exciting things now is my wife is beginning to develop a passion for riding and we have begun mountain bike together as well as some light road riding.
