An Investment In Relationships

I found this to be an interesting article. It spoke to my belief that spending time with family is important and the different ways those memories can be created. I believe that any activity that a family can do together is a great investment in the each individuals future as well as the families future. In my family a lot of the family activity was spent sailing on our boat or canoeing and camping trips. I have countless memories from those trips and are some of the happiest memories of my life. What ways are you creating life long memories for your family?

Some Purchases May Still Be Worth the Price

By Ron Lieber, NY Times

In the last month or so, it has become much harder to take out our wallets without feeling guilty. No single authority figure has told us not to spend. But people are scared, and that fear is showing up in lower sales on all sorts of big-ticket items, from autos to electronics.

But it’s easy to forget a couple of important things. First of all, the vast majority of people in the United States are not going to lose their jobs. Second, most of us work not merely for subsistence but so we can spend money on things and experiences that bring us some form of contentment. So let this serve as a reminder that there may be plenty of good reasons left to spend what you earn.

This is not a call to consumer patriotism, a suggestion that we all go shopping for the good of the economy. Instead, I’m merely suggesting that if you’re feeling undeserving of anything special at this particular moment, or think you should help perform some sort of collective penance for our national  overspending, you may want to cut yourself some slack.

My Paradise and Paying It Forward

It’s funny about how things happen in life. Random events happen in a row and it makes you stop and think about stuff. Or at least it makes me stop and think for a few moments.

Today I am going to deviate somewhat from the topic of cycling and cycling related stuff.  In many cases some of my best ideas come when I am out spinning the crank. Maybe these are my “Pedalations” these ideas that come to me in the saddle and out on the open road.

One thing I love doing out on a ride is saying hello to everyone that I pass by. It is a simple gesture but how often do you acknowledge everyone that you pass by during your day?  Words don’t have to be spoken but a kind gesture such as a smile will work. In our busy hectic life the kindness of human interaction could go a long way. I mean genuine interaction not that kind that you sometimes get from a store employee because someone told them that they needed to acknowledge you. I mean true genuine interaction.  (What has always amazed me is that when I travel south on I95 that the farther South I get the more friendly people are and it is genuine friendliness. Why is that?) When I pass somebody on a ride whether it is a fellow cyclist, a runner, or just someone cutting their lawn or retrieving the mail they are often caught off guard when I greet them. In almost every case I get a smile or a wave in response.

Why do I tell you this? Well yesterday (October 28) my wife forwarded this e-mail to me from her  God Father.

Trek Madone 5.2

This year I brought in some Trek Madone 5.2  Performance for demo bikes. I got a 54, 56 and 58 cm for use by the staff and for customers to take off site for longer rides. The Madone underwent a complete redesign and I thought this was a perfect opportunity for our customers to check out the changes first hand.

On my trek Travel Trip I took in September of ’05 I had the opportunity to ride a Trek 5200 for the week and was impressed. I was interested to see how the redesigned Madone would stack up to the 5200 that I had ridden so this last year I have spent a considerable amount of my ridding time on the 56 that we have as a demo.

Mavic R-SYS Wheels

This summer I have found myself riding one of our demo bikes a Madone 5.2 with the new performance geometry.  I’ve been impressed with the Madone over the summer and have enjoyed riding it.  During the season I have been swapping out wheels on the Madone. We’ve been increasing the number of demo wheels we have and I like to try as many of them as I can to see the differences. I found the new Mavic R-SYS wheels stayed on the bike for an extended period of time.

Mavic has built some of the world’s best wheels for a long time and their wheels are well loved by cyclists around the world. The R-SYS wheels use carbon tubular spokes on the front and on the non drive side in the rear. The drive side still uses aluminum spokes on the rear.

Cycling Gets Some Respect

Well it is beginning to look like cycling is finally getting some long overdue respect from our politicians. We still have a long way to go but they have to start somewhere.

The Bailout Bill in section 211 has a “transportation fringe benefit for bicycle commuters” The Bill allows for “qualified bicycle commuting reimbursement”  for “reasonable expenses incurred by the employee during such calendar year for the purchase of a bicycle and bicycle improvements, repair, and storage, if such bicycle is regularly used for travel between the employee’s residence and place of employment”- your bike expenses, up to 20 bucks a month, can be covered by your boss as a benefit tax free. Read more of the wording from the bill at the bottom of this entry.

Next I was reading The Capital and came across a piece that Sen. James C. Rosapepe of Prince George’s County and Del. William A. Bronrott of Montgomery County are proposing that 5% of the state’s school construction budget be set aside for walk to school improvements. In addition they want pedestrian and bike safety to be a top priority when the state is looking to give aid to school districts for transportation. Mr. Rosapepe feels that the transportation funds currently favor bus fleets and driving. No really imagine that.
